High School Mission Exchange

July 7-14 in the Diocese of South Dakota

A team of seven high school youth and three adults will travel to the Black Hills in South Dakota, where they’ll teach the 5th-6th grade camp session at Thunderhead Episcopal Center.  Sightseeing includes Mt. Rushmore, and maybe some bison sightings.  As part of this Mission Exchange, we will welcome a South Dakota team to Maine in 2020.

Why a Mission Exchange? A mission exchange is an opportunity for two communities to get to know one another over time, to learn from one another, and to mutually benefit from working together to be Christ’s hands and feet in the world. This is a group exchange, not an individual exchange – we will be hosted by a camp and by the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota.

Where are they headed? To Thunderhead Episcopal Center, a camp in the Diocese of South Dakota, where campers come together as a community of faith.  60% of campers receive a full scholarship, supported by the Diocese of South Dakota, to attend.  Portia Corbin, Missioner for Camping and Retreats in the Diocese, states, “Last year, 53% of our campers were Native American children who live on various reservations.  For many of these campers, coming to camp is the one time of the year where they are off the reservation, and are eating three meals a day.” Watch the video on the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota’s homepage to learn more about Thunderhead Episcopal Center’s camp: https://episcopalchurchsd.org/
