Young People from the Diocese of South Dakota join us in Maine
This summer, Maine Episcopal Youth will host a team of young people from Thunderhead Episcopal Center, where a team of youth traveled in 2019. Look for more details soon!
Why a Mission Exchange? A mission exchange is an opportunity for two communities to get to know one another over time, to learn from one another, and to mutually benefit from working together to be Christ’s hands and feet in the world. This is a group exchange, not an individual exchange – in 2019 we were hosted by a camp and by the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota, and in 2020 the Diocese of Maine will host staff from Thunderhead Episcopal Center in South Dakota.
What happened in 2019? A group of six youth traveled to Thunderhead Episcopal Center, a camp in the Diocese of South Dakota, where campers come together as a community of faith. 60% of campers receive a full scholarship, supported by the Diocese of South Dakota, to attend. Portia Corbin, Missioner for Camping and Retreats in the Diocese, states, “Last year, 53% of our campers were Native American children who live on various reservations. For many of these campers, coming to camp is the one time of the year where they are off the reservation, and are eating three meals a day.” Watch the video on the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota’s homepage to learn more about Thunderhead Episcopal Center’s camp: https://episcopalchurchsd.org/
How can you help? Please pray for our Mission Team, and for campers and staff at Thunderhead. And if you would like to donate, know that your money will support the team coming to Maine this year, the team headed out to South Dakota again next year, and campers at Thunderhead Episcopal Center.
